And almost every dog owner is familiar with it, because almost every four-legged friend suffers from stomach problems at some point in their life. In most cases, stomach problems can be traced back to harmless causes - but not always.

Why does my dog suffer from stomach problems? How do I recognize this and what can I do if my four-legged friend has stomach problems? We provide answers to these questions in this article.

Why does my dog suffer from stomach problems?

The dog's stomach is one of the most important organs in the entire organism and has a major influence on the general well-being of the four-legged friend. Since the stomach has far more tasks to do than just taking care of digestion, the causes of stomach problems in dogs can be varied.

They range from bacteria that infect the stomach and can, for example, cause inflammation of the gastric mucosa (gastritis), foreign bodies, food mites, medications, parasites, food changes, stress and even intolerances.

These are just a few of the possible causes of stomach problems in dogs. Illnesses of other digestive organs , such as liver disease or inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), can also trigger symptoms of stomach problems - although the dog's stomach is not directly affected.

The most common causes of stomach disorders include malnutrition or overnutrition in dogs. Accordingly, problems with the stomach, intestines and digestion can usually be prevented through feeding strategies that are particularly tailored to the needs of the four-legged friend.

How do I recognize stomach problems in dogs?

Stomach problems in dogs can be noticeable, for example, through the following signs :

  • Diarrhea, slimy stools
  • Flatulence
  • noticeable abdominal noises such as stomach rumbling or gurgling
  • Vomit
  • acid belching
  • increased smacking
  • frequent licking of the muzzle
  • Loss of appetite
  • restlessness
  • tense posture
  • hardened abdominal wall
  • Sensitivity to touch – increased in the abdominal area

What can I do if my dog has stomach problems?

If you suspect that your dog is suffering from stomach problems and your four-legged friend experiences one or more of the above-mentioned symptoms over several days, then it is important to get to the bottom of the cause of the symptoms.

Have your four-legged friend examined by a veterinarian

Please visit your veterinarian first to have your dog examined . The veterinarian will first rule out direct causes such as foreign bodies in the digestive tract or an intestinal obstruction.

A detailed preliminary report can help your veterinarian find the cause. It is therefore best to document all abnormalities and symptoms that your dog shows. It can also be helpful to tell your veterinarian what you are feeding your four-legged friend, when and how, in order to rule out malnutrition or overeating.

It's best to bring a sample of your dog's stool with you to your vet's appointment so that the cause of the stomach problems can be found using laboratory analyzes in order to initiate the right therapy for your four-legged friend.

Support your dog with problems with his stomach, intestines and digestion

If your dog suffers from stomach and intestinal problems, it will be very helpful to support the gastrointestinal tract with a gentle diet and supplements.

Whether it's well-cooked poultry with boiled rice enriched with carrots and a portion of cottage cheese or Morosh carrot soup - light food is an ideal companion for stomach, intestinal and digestive problems.

In addition, supplementary feed can support digestion and harmonize your pet's stomach and intestines. It's always best to seek advice from your veterinarian so that you can find the right thing for your animal.
