Noch ganz sauber? Hunde waschen – ja, nein, vielleicht?

Still completely clean? Washing dogs – yes, no, maybe?

Reading time: 6 minutes

That washed really well! A question that concerns many dog owners and often creates potential for discussion: Can I wash my dog? If yes, how often – and with which shampoo? Find out more about the topic in this blog post.

Can I wash my dog?

We're all good - but are our dogs too? Let's start with the basics: Washing dogs is absolutely okay - occasionally even necessary. As a rule of thumb, you should remember to wash dogs as often as necessary and as little as possible .

If you bathe your four-legged friend too often, their fur can become brittle, dull and dry . The reason is that regular washing loses the natural oils that keep dogs' fur and skin healthy, shiny and supple. It makes only a small difference whether shampoos or plain water are used.

The big question: fur cleaning - how and how often?

  • Healthy four-legged friends generally do not need to be bathed too often
  • For most dogs, a few times a year is enough
  • Dogs with long fur may also need a bath more often, especially in the wet season
  • A bath should always be given after heat
  • Excessive washing increases susceptibility to disease

Really fat – the fatty layer of the skin as a natural protective barrier

You can imagine it like this: Washing itself is a neutral process that is neither particularly good nor particularly bad for your dog. Coat cleaning only has negative effects if it is done too often. If you wash your dog too often - whether with dog shampoo or without - the natural layer of fat will gradually disappear. This protects your four-legged friend from infections, for example, keeps the skin supple and makes the fur resistant to water.

The result of a loss of the fat layer is, among other things , itchy skin and a dull coat . However, for some dogs it can be beneficial to take a long bath every now and then - and to be thoroughly cleaned of stubborn dirt and grime with a shampoo suitable for dogs.

Dog skin and human skin – the difference simply explained

Dog skin and human skin are in fact two completely different pairs of shoes - that may sound banal at first, but it should definitely be kept in mind. For example, many pet owners wash their dogs with their own shampoo or baby shampoo. However, it is important to mention that a dog's skin is structured completely differently than our own:

  • Dogs' skin is much thinner
  • The pH value of dogs is between 7 and 7.5, that of humans is around 5.5
  • Dogs have significantly fewer sweat glands
  • Dog skin heals faster than human skin
  • Dogs have completely different skin flora

Shampoo for dogs – how often can you use it?

For messheads, dirty finches and dirty sparrows: If your dog has unruly, long fur , it may sometimes be necessary to put him in the bathtub or shower every now and then and clean the fur thoroughly. In spring, for example, it can be a relief to wash pollen etc. out of your dog's fur - a dog-friendly shampoo can be of good use here. There are also some breeds for which regular shampooing makes sense, otherwise the fur becomes too dirty or even matted.

One hand washes the other (paw): When bathing your dog, make sure to use a skin-friendly shampoo that is tailored to the dog's skin. Dog shampoos for mild cleaning should be tailored to the animal's pH value and avoid irritating ingredients. If you have specific skin problems, such as allergies or eczema, a veterinary shampoo can help your four-legged friend.

When it comes to how often you use a dog shampoo, you should take your dog's specific needs and skin characteristics into account. For example, if the fur is very dirty after a mud bath, you can use a dog shampoo without hesitation. If you notice a negative change in the coat when you use shampoo more often - for example, heavy dandruff or reddened areas - you should consult your veterinarian.

The process: 10 tips for a stress-free laundry day

1. Ideally, get your dog used to bathing at a young age - if your four-legged friend learns to love contact with water when he is a puppy , you will certainly save yourself a lot of valuable nerves in the future :)

2. Integrate a skin and coat check into your routine - get to know the needs of your four-legged friend's skin and coat in order to find the best possible care

3. Line the area around the bathtub or shower with towels and have a large drying towel ready for your dog

4. Brush your four-legged friend thoroughly before bathing so that there are no more tangles in your pet's fur

5. Wet your dog's fur completely - make sure that the water is at a comfortable, lukewarm temperature . After all, your four-legged friend should feel comfortable!

6. Put a mild dog shampoo in your hands and shampoo your four-legged friend thoroughly - ideally, you should avoid the facial area and clean it separately with a washcloth. For certain regions we recommend special gentle cleaning liquids, for example for the eyes or ears of your four- legged friend

7. Rinse out the shampoo thoroughly. Many pet owners prefer to shampoo their dog twice - the first time removes dirt and grime so that the shampoo can develop its caring properties afterwards

8. Make sure that no residue of the dog shampoo remains in the fur , as in the worst case this can lead to skin irritation

9. Allow your dog to shake himself out a little and then dry him gently with a soft towel

10. Then take your four-legged friend to a place where it is not cold or windy so that he does not catch a cold. As soon as the fur is dry enough, you can gently brush your dog again and, if necessary, use a moisturizing fur spray
