Summer is just around the corner, and with it the long-awaited vacation season. For many dog owners, not taking their four-legged friend along is unthinkable, so they plan their vacations with their dog in mind. Whether a trip to the seaside or a hiking holiday in the mountains, traveling with a dog often involves taking the car as a means of transport, as it offers maximum flexibility and is often the most comfortable way for dogs to travel. To ensure a stress-free and safe trip, some preparation and planning are necessary. Here's what you need to consider:
Why the car is ideal for traveling with a dog
For many dogs, the car is the most comfortable mode of transport: no noise like on an airplane, no strangers like on a bus or train. The car also offers much more flexibility: You can stop for a walk at any time, and you can plan your route individually.
Advantages at a glance:
- Flexibility during departure and breaks
- Less stress for noise-sensitive animals
- No muzzle or transport box requirement as on public transport
- Bringing dog bed, food, etc. is easily possible
The right preparation – start stress-free
1. Checklist before departure
- EU pet passport with vaccinations (especially rabies)
- First aid kit for dogs
- Sufficient water and food for the journey
- Pack your favorite blanket, bowls, poop bags , etc.
- Walk before departure
- Don't let your dog eat too much before the trip. Some dogs struggle with nausea.
2. Get the car used to the dog
Not every dog jumps into the car enthusiastically. Dogs who aren't used to car rides should be introduced gradually: first short trips, then longer trips with a positive goal (e.g., a trip to a park). The car should be associated with positive things for your dog. A chew snack or a licking mat, for example, can help with this. For particularly excitable and anxious dogs, our relaxation products can provide more peace of mind.
Safety first – secure your dog properly
An unsecured dog in a car is not only dangerous, but also prohibited by law (Section 23 of the German Road Traffic Act). A dog in a car is legally considered "cargo" and must be adequately secured.
Security options:
1. Transport box
- In the trunk or on the back seat
- Stable and safe
- Many dogs feel very comfortable in a crate as a resting place
2. Dog belt / safety harness
- Attaches to the seat belt
- Alternative if no transport box is available
- Look for tested products with crash tests
3. Partition grid or net
- For large dogs in the trunk
- Dog can move but remains separated from the driver area
- Combined with non-slip base and lying surface optimally
Regular breaks – important for humans and animals
You should take a break every 2–3 hours. Use this time for a short walk, a drink, and perhaps a small meal.
💡 Tip: Look for dog-friendly rest areas along your route in advance. Not every rest area is suitable for a stop.
Beware of the heat! Never leave your dog in the car
Just a few minutes in the sun can turn a car into a deadly trap. Even in seemingly mild temperatures, the interior temperature can quickly rise to life-threatening levels. Therefore, never leave your dog alone in the car—even with the window open.
Find dog-friendly accommodation
More and more hotels, holiday homes, and campsites are welcoming dogs. When booking, look for notices like "dogs allowed" or "pet-friendly." Most platforms offer filters to make your search easier.
Important criteria:
- Are there walking trails nearby?
- Are dogs allowed in dining areas?
- Are there any additional fees?
- Is the number of dogs limited?
- Are there any size or weight restrictions?
Entry requirements abroad
If you are traveling abroad by car, you should definitely find out about the entry requirements for dogs. For travel outside the EU (e.g. Special regulations often apply in some countries (e.g. Switzerland, Norway).
Please note:
- EU pet passport with valid rabies vaccination
- Microchip identification is mandatory
- Partial muzzle requirement (e.g. e.g. in Austria, Italy)
- In some countries, dogs must be kept on a leash
Conclusion: Holiday with dog in the car – relaxed and safe
With proper planning and preparation, nothing stands in the way of a successful road trip with your four-legged friend. Pay attention to safety, regular breaks, and dog-friendly accommodations – then the trip will be a wonderful experience not only for you but also for your dog.
